The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
