Astronaut Shares Depression Following Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip

Crew Member during spaceflight
The scientist and activist, a women's health researcher, was onboard the automated spacecraft in Spring 2025.

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

β€œI told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

β€œFor a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. β€œWeeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. β€œYou all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
